Everything about the application of floats and deck parts

There is a lot to consider when constructing a floating jetty. For example, the jetty must suit the type of boats that visit the jetty. But the jetty must also be a safe place for everyone who enters the jetty.

Good and safe pontoons starts with the basics. That is why in this article we will discuss the application of floats and deck parts in more detail.

Floats

Floats can be used for various purposes. Think of a jetty, fishing pier, terrace, walkway, boathouse and even for the mooring of cruise ships. Floats are necessary for all these types of jetties. In this article we mainly focus on the most common application: jetties.

Jetty jetties come in all shapes and sizes. Which floats best suit your requirements depends on the specific jetty. We are happy to advise you on this.

We exclusively use Walcon Marine products for our jetties. Walcon Marine guarantees excellent quality through 50 years of experience. This company's jetties are located in more than 30 different countries and are completely custom-made. Walcon Marine supplies two types of jetties.

Concrete floats & dimensions

Our concrete floats have an expanded polystyrene core (a type of polystyrene foam) and are protected by an outer layer of glass fiber reinforced concrete. This ensures a particularly sustainable result.

Due to their high weight, the concrete floats are extremely suitable for large jetties. At Havenspecialist we offer these floats in more than twenty different sizes. The smallest is 1220 x 610 x 762 mm. The largest concrete float is 2240 x 1220 x 915 mm.

Please take into account the high weight of these floats. Each piece weighs well over 1,000 kg. This obviously affects transport and installation. Of course, Havenspecialist can take care of this for you.

Plastic floats & dimensions

In addition to concrete floats, we also offer plastic floats. These plastic floats are also reinforced with fiberglass and have a core of expanded polystyrene.

The big advantage is that the plastic used (polyethylene) is lighter than water, making these floats highly buoyant. Dirt also hardly adheres to the plastic. This makes the floats low-maintenance and permanently representative.

Plastic floats are especially suitable for smaller jetties and terraces. They are therefore a lot cheaper and a lot lighter than the concrete variants.

Port specialist is happy to advise you on the suitable type for your situation. We offer more than 10 different sizes. The smallest is 910 x 610 x 500 mm and the largest is 1400 x 500 x 750 mm.

Difference between jetties and pontoons

Our floats are also very suitable for floating pontoons. A pontoon is a type of floating platform, which is not attached to the quay or to the bottom. This is in contrast to a jetty.

Pontoons are used, among other things, for work on canals or rivers. The crane used to carry out the work is placed on a pontoon. Pontoons also play a useful role in houseboat maintenance. The painting company places the pontoon on the pontoon to carry out the work.

Another example of a pontoon can be seen at the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. They have had a terrace on the water there since last summer. A pontoon was used for this. Havenspecialist's floats are also extremely suitable for these pontoons.

Deck parts & application

After the floats, it's time to think about the deck parts. The deck parts influence the appearance of the pontoons. But the specific properties also play a role. At Havenspecialist we offer deck parts in three different materials: wood, plastic (GRP) and composite. Each material has its advantages and disadvantages.

Wooden deck parts

We usually make wooden deck parts from hardwood, but other types of wood are also possible. Hardwood provides a beautiful and natural look.

For safety, the deck parts are provided with grooves, so that you always have grip. The hardwood deck parts can also be walked on with bare feet. As the deck parts wear, the risk of splinters arises.

Wooden deck parts last approximately 10 to 15 years. Do you want the look of wood, but with a longer lifespan? Then go for composite.

Plastic (GRP) deck parts

GRP stands for glass fiber reinforced plastic. These deck parts are especially interesting for heavy industry. Think of offshore, petrochemicals and shipping.

The deck parts are chemically resistant and weather resistant, among other things. They have a long lifespan and require little maintenance. Due to the strength of the parts, they can withstand large spans.

If desired, we provide the deck parts with an extra grid layer for extra skid resistance. This is especially useful in places where liquids are used. To give the deck parts the right look, they are available in all RAL colors.

The different types of deck parts are widely applicable. We mainly apply deck parts to jetties and finger piers. But the deck parts are also suitable for walkways, fishing piers, floating terraces and bridges.

Customization and installation

Our deck parts are always custom-made. This applies to wood and GRP. This means you are assured of deck parts that meet your wishes and requirements 100%. We would be happy to visit you for advice without obligation. If desired, we can also advise you on the installation of items such as mooring rings, bollards, cleats and safety facilities.

The complete jetties and all accessories are professionally installed by us. This way you are assured of a safe and sustainable end result.
